Idaho, Challenges us once more!

April 17, 2019- Snake River Rv Resort, Idaho Falls, ID

This morning Team Ronyx wakes us to a fridge that isn’t working. We had bought a 12v converter plug to plug into the wall when we aren’t driving and apparently the converter we bought was not rated for our fridge. It started to melt and then died. We interviewed with Rett from East Idaho News, then they set off for a hike around town. First stop, Walmart, to see if they had a converter plug. As they walked through town they spotted several restaurants and decided they would try the local BBQ place after they go to the store. While Meghan went into the store Ron sat outside with the dogs. Some people were very curious and even thought he was a panhandler. He explained our journey and a very nice lady went in the store and bought the dogs treats! Meghan didn’t find a converter plug but found a few other things they needed. Team Ronyx picked up their lunch and then headed back to the campground to enjoy their meal. When they returned, several of their other fellow campers stopped by to chat with them about the adventure. One gentleman even knew where Cochranville was because he had looked at houses there at one time. They worked on planning their route, and Meghan caught up on some writing. The rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing.

Ron and Onyx leaving their KIFI interview

We can’t believe it’s Thursday again! We are attempting to get to Victor, ID today but we aren’t sure what to expect with the road conditions. Ron sets out with Onyx around 9 am and they are heading East. Ron took the suggested bicycle route this morning from the campground. It took him on the a Greenbelt trail in a horse shoe shape to cross over the river. Meghan waited a little over an hour before she left to catch up to him. She planned to make a few stops at some auto parts stores to see if they had the converter plug that they needed. She wasn’t having very much luck, each place she stopped suggested another place to look. Ron calls, he found the Idaho News Channel 8 station along the highway. He tells Meghan he is going to stop and see if they want to do a story on him. She tells him she will find him and she hops in the truck. She drives a few blocks down the road but couldn’t find him or the station. She looks up his location on an app they are using to keep track of each other’s location, it tells her to turn around. She does, and still doesn’t find him. Meghan is getting a little frustrated so she calls Ron again to get his location, no answer. This time, Meghan decides to just drive in the direction of Ron in hopes that she will spot the News Station or Ron. After she went about 3 blocks further than she had the first time, she sees Ron standing on the sidewalk. They talk with Jilliana from the station. She asks Team Ronyx who wants to be interviewed and Ron points at Meghan. So, Meghan gets to handle this interview. Luckily though, they interview Ron too! After that was done it was almost 11 am. Team Ronyx is on the road, Meghan goes to get fuel and a few groceries. (This tiny fridge/tiny living is a little costly with having to buy smaller containers of essentials like milk) Meghan catches up with Ron about 10 miles up the road. He tells her how he is riding against traffic and a man was driving on the rumble strips straight at him like he was playing chicken. Typically we run into a few people not paying attention or who act like they are being inconvenienced but this person really pushed the boundaries. Ron said he jumped off the bike and ran down the embankment with the bike and Onyx in the trailer. (This is one of the main reasons why we have Fonyx.) A few more miles down the road, Ron spots a Subway and calls Meghan to let her know so she can stop and get food for the day. She goes to Subway and Ron pedals on, after another hour or so, Meghan catches up to Ron again and they eat their lunch along the road. Soon they are climbing mountain hills again. They know they aren’t going to make it to Victor today as the day is getting later. After Ron has pedaled 30 miles, they start looking for places to camp. Since we are at higher elevations, there aren’t any roads or campgrounds open. They find the next populated area at Swan Valley, ID. Meghan waits for Ron to arrive at the gas station/market. He has ridden 49.5 miles today. They discuss where they want to camp and a really nice couple approaches them and starts a conversation. Next thing you know, they are following them out to a remote camping area 5 miles out in the woods. It was beautiful there. Team Ronyx agreed that it was tied for the best along with the Silver Creek West camping spot they had in Bellevue, ID. They chatted with the couple for awhile before they parted ways. Ron and the dogs played fetch while Meghan worked on the blog and uploading pictures to the computer. That evening they had a lovely fire. Ron and the dogs ate food cooked over the fire, and Meghan enjoyed the last half of her Subway sub.

Ron and Onyx riding through the Targhee National Forest south of the Stouts Mountain

7:00 am we are packing up camp and heading into town to the gas station where Ron stopped peddling last night. We get there and top off the gas tank on the truck and gas can for the generator. Ron takes Onyx and starts pedalling to Victor, ID. He told Meghan to sit at the gas station for 30 minutes or more to give him some time to get up highway 31. After about 30 minutes, he called Meghan to tell her to sit tight as the road was straight up and there weren’t any pull off places. Meghan pulled off the road to wait for Ron to give her the all clear. After another 20 minutes, he called to let her know there was a pull off place. She drove to him, the road is narrow, winding and a pretty steep incline. There is little to no shoulder on this road. Ron is pedaling or walking the hills. When there is a lot of traffic, he is off the bike waiting for it to go by or pushing the bike and trailer on the shoulder of the road. Meghan drives ahead past the 11 mile marker. There is construction, the road is all torn up and large loose rock is where the pavement should be. She pulls over and waits for Ron, she starts to jog back to the section of the road to try and snap a picture of him coming through but there is a lot of traffic. Ron switches out Onyx for Fonyx after the rough road. Today’s ride is very challenging. After about 17 miles of hills, Ron finally gets to go down towards the town of Victor. Meghan goes ahead a few miles into town to find a bathroom and park the truck. She walks the dogs around town until Ron arrives. They load up the bike gear and head over to the BBQ place that is around the corner. It is beautiful out today, the sun is shining, and people are walking around in their flip flops and jackets. Meghan overheard several people chatting about how this is the nicest day they have had in a while. After lunch, the bike and trailer gear is out and they are heading to Wyoming! Ron has another grueling ride up the 6% grade. They reach the Wyoming line at 27 miles. Onyx and Phoenix get to run around and play in the snow and Meghan takes them down to the stream. After a brief rest, Ron is ready to pedal again. He puts Fonyx in the trailer and heads up the mountain further, this time it’s a 10% grade. Ron pedals another 2 more miles up the mountain. They meet at a weigh station; Ron decides to weigh the bike, trailer and Fonyx. The scale says he is pulling 120 lbs of gear!  Team Ronyx discuss the road conditions; there is more snow on the shoulders and the traffic is increasing. They decided to drive the remaining 12 miles into Jackson, WY and it was good they did! As they were riding down the mountain, the shoulders were still covered in several feet of snow and the traffic was heavy with the holiday traffic. About halfway down the mountain, the brakes on the truck started to get too hot. They pull off the road and wait for them to cool off. A sheriff pulls over to check on them and he asks us who is from Cochranville, PA. We explain that we are both from PA but now live on the coast and about our journey. He informs us that he grew up in Chester County, PA and that he has lived out here for 16 years. When the brakes are cooled off, Team Ronyx heads into town, once they reach town they decide to go find dinner and then try to find a place to camp for the night. They found a Pizza Hut, as Ron was going in to order their pizza another sheriff pulled up and told us he saw us on the news. We asked him about potential camp spots as everything in this area is still closed. After a few minutes, he came up with an idea; he called the office and got us special permission to camp in a day use area for the night. We thanked him and after our dinner was done, we headed over to our camp spot for the night. We hiked the dogs around the Snake River and Ron played fetch with the dogs while Meghan chatted with her mom on the phone. That evening Ron set up the generator and heated up water for his tiny home bath. After they were settled for the night they discussed their potential plans for heading up to Moran, WY and Yellowstone this weekend.
